There is also a property called FieldTypeDefinition - I'd expect that to allow me to get at the XML defining the site column that uses my custom field type.

Digging a little into the code for SPFieldCollection, the collection inside SPContentType, the OnAdded is called as the very last thing in the internal method AddFieldAsXmlInternal, which is responsible for adding the field to the contenttype.

So my (untested) idea would be to extend the OnAdded method of the field, use the debugger to figure out the exact flags it will be called with, and then add code to get the properties from the xml definition.

I want to deploy a custom field in a content type using a feature. I did the xmlns trick and it worked. But the problem i have is the property is never set in the custom field.

This works for you? Becuase with adding the xmlns it doesn't throw the xml validating error but in my case the property is never set in the custom field :(
