Workflow - how many times did I hear this word in the last 4 years. SharePoint and workflow - oh yeah, even more
.
With Windows Workflow Foundation, SharePoint Designer and even the built-in workflows of WSS/MOSS (yes, the three-state is also available in WSS!) we do now have a wonderful playground to really start creating fully integrated workflows in SharePoint. Since I still have the habbit to learn things from the very beginning, I was looking for a book (and yes, here I'm old fashioned too) that covers workflow in the Office System context.
And I found a book that is in my opinion probably one of the most fascinating developer-facing books I've ever read:
"Workflow in the 2007 Microsoft Office System", from APRESS, authored by David Mann (ISBN: 978-1-59059-700-2).
Starting really at the basics of basics, David Mann leads you with his very special sense of humour (I like it, sarcastic - just like me) soon to develop own activities, workflows and so on. The level gets higher and higher with each chapter, but still I consider this as an "easy reading". At the end of the book you know what you should about workflows in the SharePoint context - but not more either. This is the perfect start to dig deeper into the matter when needed.
What I liked also very much is the fact that David presents (almost) real-world examples and not just the stupid "Hello world" stuff. Also, he focuses a lot on clean deployments and includes a bunch of "side bars" that explain certain special topics - but again only as much as you need in order to understand what it is all about and how to obtain more infos.
In any case - I recommend this book to anyone who wants to do workflows with the 2007 Microsoft Office System! Thanks David!
