Vor wenigen Minuten habe ich hier gelesen, dass Patrick Tisseghem am 3. September in Gothenburg (Schweden) offensichtlich an Herzversagen verstorben ist.

Ich hatte die Gelegenheit, Patrick auf den letzten SharePoint Conferences persönlich zu treffen und mit ihm zu sprechen. Ich habe Patrick als sehr erfahrenen SharePoint-Architekten kennengelernt, der immer ein offenes Ohr und einen guten Rat für andere SharePoint-Entwickler oder -Architekten hatte. Die wenn auch kurzen Gespräche mit ihm waren mir sehr wertvoll und wichtig.

Mit Patrick Tisseghem verliert die weltweite SharePoint-Gemeinde ein wertvolles und aktives Mitglied.

Auch ich möchte seiner seiner Familie mein tiefempfundenes Beileid ausprechen.

I haven't posted for a while, because as I'm sure you're all aware, there are only so many minutes in the day and when you fill them with doing SharePoint, there is very little time to talk about SharePoint. What happened is that I got very busy with multiple designs and deployments for numerous customers, both large and small. My sales people seem to have gotten their brains wrapped around the product, too, so we're doing a lot of pre-sales work. It is a growing market and I appear to have it nearly cornered in my neck of the woods. No one else is offering SharePoint consulting services here.

We did another SharePoint demo today, presenting Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express, and I noticed a trend in customer reactions. Some customers get spooked by SharePoint just because it’s so big. Although all the technicians in the room had an appreciation of the technical niceties of the product, the decision-maker—who is not very technical—grew overwhelmed by the potential complexity of setting it up and putting it to use. I know the salesman had wanted to keep things simple, but the technicians asked a lot of questions, which I did my best to answer.

Just before she left, I tried to assuage her concerns by saying that a lot of people take away different perceptions of SharePoint: some are interested in calendars, some in enterprise search, some in document sharing. They don’t have to understand or even use the other parts; it doesn’t need to be a holistic solution. She replied that unfortunately, she tends to think holistically. She said she might have to rethink her expectations for SharePoint, although she did mention there were several things she liked about it.

I went to lunch with my wife afterward and lamented this fact:

SharePoint, even the free versions, is simply too big. Unfortunately it’s a Microsoft product, which means it’s full featured and configurable to the nth degree. I tell people all this, but sometimes it doesn’t turn out the way I intended. Some people get excited and think of the possibilities. Others become discouraged. I’ve had three demonstrations resulting in the latter.

My brilliant wife said, “Think of it this way. Getting SharePoint is like buying a piano. You can play it any way you want to. You can keep it simple and play chopsticks. You can keep it around for holidays and sing Christmas carols. You can put it to work and play hymns on it every day. Or you can perform masterpieces, like concertos by Chopin or Mozart. Even if you’re just plinking away on two notes, you still have all the other keys, ready to use when you need them. SharePoint is a piano.”

I think that’s the way to approach it.

Modifying the Master Page and its Corresponding CSS file

To customize the look and feel of the your SharePoint site, a master page was modified to brand its pages. The BlueBand.master page was modified and resaved as [yourportal].master. The corresponding master page CSS file, Band.CSS was also resaved as [yourportal].CSS and modified to change the color scheme from blue to green, as well as a few minor tweaks. Here are the highlights of that process:

Modify the Master Page

1. Select Site Actions | Site Settings | Modify All Site Settings from the upper right drop down menu

2. Select Master pages and page layouts

3. Select the drop down arrow next to BlueBand.master

4. Select Edit in Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer

5. Master pages must be checked out prior to modification. Click OK at the following screen. Or choose not to checkout, we’ll be making a copy of this master page, not modifying this master (keep all the default MS master so you can revert back if needed!)

6. You may receive a warning box regarding harmful files. Click OK if this message appears.

7. The file will (eventually) open in SharePoint Designer. Notice the master page only encompasses the top header and a little side part. The master page controls these parts, known as Chrome, on the page (the rest of the home page is determined by a Welcome Page page layout, which will be discussed in another document).

8. Click File | Save As… | and save BlueBand.master as a different file. The current master page was named [Yourportal].master. Changes made to [yourportal].master revolve around the banner/header graphic, where the header file replaced the standard .net control with logo (the default logo is the upside-down V with a dot) and portal name. The table size was modified to accommodate this change. View BlueBand.master and [Yourportal].master for a side by side comparison.

Modify the Corresponding CSS File

In this section, I use Band.css as an example. Note that you could also use A COPY of core.css. Core.css resides in the _layouts, but you will see it when you open your .master page in SharePoint Designer since .master uses this css heavily. Double click the core.css tab in the Manage Styles window (usually bottom right) and it should open up. I suggest you rename as Portalcore.css where portal is the name of your portal or some easy way to know that this file is for portalX and is based on core.css. Resave BEFORE you make any changes. You don’t want to save over the default core.css! Core.css is also better to use when you are modifying default.master (a COPY of default.master, that is) or if you want to make modifications on wp classes (that’s another blog, coming soon). Refer to good ol’ Heather Solomon’s CSS guide for modifications.
1. Select Site Actions | View All Site Content from the upper right drop down menu

2. Select Style Library

3. Select en-us

4. Select Core Styles

5. Click the down arrow next to Band.css and select Check Out

6. Now that Band.css is checked out, click Band.css again in the style library to automatically open the file in SharePoint Designer.

7.       From SharePoint Designer, click File | Save As… | and save Band.css as: http://[yourportal]/style library/en-us/core styles/[other name]Band.CSS. It may be good practice to retain “Band” in the style name, as there are quite a few .CSS files in SharePoint that govern various parts of the sites, and it is helpful leave a historical trail to the originating style.

8.       There are several images that are referenced in the Band.CSS file. These images may be found in the style library

9.       http://[yourportal]/style library/images/ or by clicking Select Site Actions | View All Site Content from the upper right drop down menu, then select Style Library | Images

10.    The images referenced in Band.CSS are blue, and needed to be modified to Sheriff Green. To accomplish this, a subfolder /[portal] was created in the style library/images folder which houses all the relevant images, copied and pasted into this folder: http://[yourportal]/style%20library/images/[yourportal].

NOTE: all images must be stepped through the process of check-in, publish a major version, and approve. Refer to Add Images to the Site Collection for details on this process.

11. Images were renamed from bl_[name].jpg to green_[name].jpg.

12. Images colors were modified to green by

a. Opening each in Macromedia Fireworks
b. Click Filters | Adjust Color | Change Hue to -105

Apply the New [YourPortal].Master and [YourPortal]Band.CSS files

Note: You can also replace Band.css in the top part of the Master page with this CSS file instead of calling it here in the alternative CSS area.

1. Select Site Actions | Site Settings | Modify All Site Settings from the upper right drop down menu

2. Under the Look and Feel Settings, select Master Page

3. From the drop down menu, select [YourPortal].master. If you want the master page to apply from this site location and all the sites created within, select the “Reset all subsites to inherit this Site Master Page setting”. This will apply the master to all subsites. If you would like to apply this master to all sites in your site collection, ensure you are at the top site, so that all other sites are subsites and apply. NOTE: this will not change administrative pages, such as the Create page as those pages utilize the System Master Page not the site master page.

4. Now scroll down within the same dialog box and select the [YourPortal]Band.CSS file by selecting Browse

5. Navigate to [YourPortal]Band.CSS and select OK (Note its location URL).

6. Now select OK to commit the changes. Don’t worry! You can always revert back to BlueBand.master and default CSS.

SharePoint: Taking SharePoint wikis offline with Outlook 2007

Two (among quite a few) features that I love about SharePoint are Wikis and the ability to take items offline with Outlook - the "Connect to Outlook" option. So the other day I was working on an internal wiki and needed some of the information included in it offline the next day, so confidently clicked connect to outlook, which of course worked fine. MOSS Events in SCOM 2007

Earlier, we installed the WSS and MOSS management pack in our SCOM server.

Now, when we explore the Authoring tree, under Management Pack Objects node, we get a Rules node. Here we get all the rules that the server can attempt to enforce. At the top of the Rules window, on the right, there's a Change Scope link that pulls up a dialog box exposing all the potential targets that are associate with the server's management packs.

If we uncheck them all, we can select only:

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 MOSS Server
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server Application Installation
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 WSS Server
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Application Installation

When we click OK, the Rules window resets to a grid with our four Type headings. When those headings are expanded, they reveal a number of rules SCOM will attempt to enforce on our MOSS Server.

The server nodes contain rules that include a rule name that is probably unique to SCOM. But the properties of each rule includes a configuration tab that associates the rule with:

An Object
A Counter
An Instance

These values map back to the counters in the Windows Performance application found under Administrative Tools.

The applicaiton nodes include a rule name and properties that map our to items in the application and system logs that you find in your computer management mmc.

You can override these rules or add your others.
