Have a SharePoint question? I have the answer!
Jason Medero SharePoint MVP: SharePoint Space for all things SharePoint, OCS, RMS, InfoPath, and Office

News

  • Jason Medero, MCP, MCT, MCTS, MVP (WSS) is a systems architect with a concentration in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) and its related Microsoft technologies. He is a managing partner of B&R Business Solutions, a central New Jersey-based firm specializing in SharePoint and surrounding technologies, infrastructure, real-time communications (OCS), and application development. He is an active member of the SharePoint User Group in New York City where he sits on the speaker selection committee. He also contributes his SharePoint knowledge as a mentor for some of the popular forums (MSD2D, MSDN).

Well now that I have finally finished up a few bigger projects and I actually have a few mins(few as in 30mins).  I decided last night that I would jump on the new MSDN forum and see if I could answer some questions and help out some fellow SharePointers.  For the life of me I couldn't find the forums (probably because I have been so busy I have not been there for over 2 months...yikes!).  So after looking for a bit it wasn't very obvious to me where I could find them I mean it was probably me not looking in the right places.  I mean i could find the TechNet newsgroups without a problem but I wanted to find the new MSDN forums (personal preference I like the forum experience).

So after about 5 mins I gave up and asked my fellow New Jersey SharePointer Bob Fox where the heck they were.  He quickly responded and provided me with exactly what I was looking for.  So for my reference and my blog readers below is the link to the new MSDN forums for SharePoint.  They are split up in some very helpful categories so post in the proper place.  If you have a question or a concern my suggestion is that you search for it before posting your question because you might find that others are having the same difficulty and the answer has already been given.

The SharePoint MSDN forums are located HERE

Also check out the SharePoint Community Portal site which literally has EVERYTHING you need!

Thanks Alpesh for the great reminder!

See ya there!

Cheers!

I've got a webpart and the AppPool is running under the Network Service identity.  It can't access a shared folder using UNC.  When I change the identity to a real user, it works.  The odd thing is, it works on ONE of our machines, but the other two don't work.

Ever seen anything like this before?

Hi,

These days i am working on a custom webpart that returns recently modifed site from multiple site collection based on currently logged on user. Can sharepoint search API search across multiple site collection. I try to use the search API but i didn't find any managed property that signifies the modified site.I mean to say there is no any metadata that describes about the modified site. My site collection has 3 level deep of subsite and i have to return all the 3 rd level subsite that are modified recently by a currently logged in user acorss multiple site collection. I tried to query on sharepoint content database itself but the result are not security trimmed and to search across multiple contenet databse is agin tough.

I will appriciate if anybody share knowlede on this.

How can I restrict access to sharepoint list (announcment) so that is all the person sees instead of seeing the entire site?

Can anyone tell me if this is possible and if so how to go about it.  I have one server, Quad Core Duo processesor 2.0 GHz with 6 GB RAM.  Were initially going to set up an Intranet with around 150-200 employees.  It should be fairly small in size to start so I'm wondering if we are ok trying to use the one server as everyting. the WFE, DB server, etc..???  We will eventually make it available for students as well.  Next I have a problem with the initial setup configuration as mentioned below.

Trying to put everything on the one Server  "Mars".   I've got 8 drives set up on a RAID.  first 2 are my C: drive with the OS and the MOSS 2007 software installed.  the next 6 drives are my D: where I installed a copy of  SQL Server 2005.

When I install MOSS 2007 it also installs its own instance of SQL onto C drive.  Now I'm trying to run through the configuration wizzard and would like to end up with the new server farm database created on D within the SQL server 2005 that is intalled there.

However, when you get to the config setting wizzard, it asks to "connect to server farm", regardless of if you choose no create a new, or yes connect to an existing, you are given the same screen "Specify Configuration database settings".    On this screen I have to give Mars as my database server.  but there is still no way to specify that its located on D and it automatically connects it the SharePoints installation of SQL on C.

I still don't know how to tell it the proper location.  Can this be done? Or when I actually install the SharePoint software do I need to install it on D instead of local disk C.  Then would it be smart enough during the configuration wizzard to pick up the SQL from D.  Maybe I'm still missing something.  Any suggestions.

Hi Mpolak,

Make sure that you are not choosing basic install as this will install SQL express.  You want to choose advanced then choose Complete install.  So you first want to install SQL 2005 on whichever drive you want in this case it looks like the D$.  Then when installing MOSS 2007 select create a new server farm.  Then specify your database server "Mars" and the database will be created wherever you installed SQL server 2005 and specified which drive the data should live in.

I hope this helps!

I've had this post for a while and reposted again. This is happening when I try to start the Sharepoint Search.

Is there any way to restrict viewing / reading a document if someone else is already viewing / reading it?  I don't mean editing, I mean reading.  As if a single copy of a book - only one reader at a time.

sdupay,

So you mean like if someone is viewing the document then no one else will even be able to open it up.  This functionality is not available OOTB but I imagine that this would not be that difficult to code a solution.
