Thanks, worked like a charm. I followed KSAT's advice first and added Domain Admin as sysadmin to SQL instance MYSHAREPOINTBOX\OFFICESERVERS first. Don't know if it was necessary but figured it wouldn't hurt.

I whole-heartedly agree that metadata is the way to go, and have implemented several project-centric doclibs using metadata.

1) How do you resolve duplicate file names? I might have a standard project document like a Statement of Work, or a Purchase Order. If you put it all in the same doclib, the files get overwritten. If you have to put the project name in the title of each iteration, you're duplicating metadata. I have not found a solution to this other than using subfolders.

2) How do you efficiently attach multiple documents to an e-mail (as when sending offsite), or access documents using 3rd party applications (like Help Desk, ERP systems, or the myriad other apps that all want a file location)? I use My Network Spaces to browse for the attachments, but the metadata is invisible by windows explorer, so the flattend file structure just ends up as an a-z list by document name -- very difficult to find a single document among 250 active projects.

The solution I'm currently using is to use both metadata and folders. The folders are a fairly simple hierarchy, only two levels deep (project manager\ Project Name), which gets you where you need to go when browsing through explorer. However, the default view is the metadata view, grouped by project name and filtered on project owner.

It should be the best way to access WSS data, shall we call it REST mode ?

On many lists in my WSS3 site I have no response from owssvr.dll . In WSS log I find (example): unexpected C++ exception: [INDEXERR] Illegal Index (4294967295) for collection with 9 elements .

Dustin,

This was one of the BEST intros to Sharepoint Designer I have ever seen. I had been beating my head on a wall trying to get SPD to dance and I couldn't figure out how to do anything.

After watching your presentation, I had my data from the WebService I wrote showing up with alternating colors on the rows, groupings, renamed headers, extra columns, special formatting to highlight data points.

My boss thinks I'm a genius! Little does he know I learned from one!

Thanks for this, it was a real eye opener and has given me more respect for Sharepoint.

I am evaluating MOSS 2007 and trying to set up a structure for Legal depart. on Legal Contracts. For this scenario , can you tell me where I should set as “site, document libraries, folder etc..?

1. Legal (assume will be site)

2. Legal Contract (assume will be sub-site of legal)

3. Legal Alphabetical setup from A-Z (ex. Letter A will be .. subsite?) under Legal Contract

4. Names of all the companies start with "A's"...(should this be document libraries or more sub-site)?

5. Under "some" of the companies, there will be sub categories of diff. Areas such as (Agreements, Amendments, Customers of the “A company”..etc) What should this be set as sub sites or document libraries?

6. Under the Customer’s category, there is a list of “Customer” names

7. Under the Customers – Then we have the meta data for each customers

How should I set this structure to get the maximum of security and best practice?

OK - As I said, I was also getting the object reference error. But, this morning, I resolved it.

It seems the user running the STSADM command MUST have full control access to the ADMIN_CONTENT database on the SQL server. I had our SQL admin grant my domain user account full control privs on the Admin Content database and reran the script and all subsequent stsadm.exe command lines successfully!

Me too... attempting to install the ApplicationTemplateCore.WSP file results in the same error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object. "

Anyone else have any luck? How is this resolved?

Just thought I should mention that this is no longer necessary with WSS 3.0/MOSS 2007. I'm using lookups on calculated fields all over the place.

Don't allow users to upload multiple documents, silly.

You can't have both metadata and bulk uploads without event handlers or workflow tagging the content according to some predefined rules.

My folder-loving users often use the Upload Multiple Documents feature, even when just uploading one document. Multiple document upload does not enforce required fields, either in SPS03 or MOSS07. What do I do?
