Discussion: Custom Field Controls vs. Custom Web Parts

I watched a video with Andrew Connell, and it was brought to my attention that Custom Field Controls may be more appropriate than custom web parts in certain situations...  One question that I have is whether the tool pane is accessible for the end user when dealing with a field control...  Can the developer set configuration data for a custom field control from sharepoint designer?  Please post any thoughts you may have.

The tool pane / task pane is only available for Web Parts, not field controls. Not sure I understand your question.

Better to post questions in the MSDN forums for follow up responses.

Thanks Andrew!  It was a great video.  I'm just looking for more information about sharepoint architecture...  When should I use field controls vs when I should use web parts.  I updated the question above, but essentially the only thing left is whether the developer can set configuration data for a field control in sharepoint designer as they add it to a new layout page...  I'll go ahead and post it in the MSDN forums.

Is there way to update publishing page properties such as scheduling and sending content review notifications?
