Users not getting a "Read-Only" or "Edit" prompt when opening documents

I had a problem with document libraries where users were opening documents they posted and they were automatically opening in read-only mode.  In some cases, with contribute rights to the doc library they were still able to modify the document and in addition, would not receive the prompt to enter versioning comments.  A fix I found was to install at least one product in the Office 2007 suite.  So far so good, the user is still running primarily Office 2003 products and with one Office 2007 product installed they now receive the prompt to select read-only or edit mode.  In addition, upon closing the document they also receive the prompt to enter versioning comments.  Version functionality in MOSS 2007 is pretty slick when it works properly!

It's a very risky fix.

I advise strongly against mixing Office 2003 and Office 2007 apps on the client to SharePoint systems.

All it takes is a single Office 2003/2007 security fix that clobbers a DLL used by the other Office version and you will lose rather than gain SharePoint functionality.

Datasheet View is often a thing you'll lose as is multiple uploads.

Mike -

Thank you for your advice, however this is the only fix I found so far - what should I do?

I know it's a bit late, but i also had the read-only problem and i believe i found the fix:

support.microsoft.com/.../870853

If you also have the problem that office documents open in IE instead of Office, this should fix it:

Everyone points to the fix at: support.microsoft.com/.../870853

But it did not work for me and if you read the directions, it says it is not intended to work for documents opened in SharePoint.

My users get the same benefit of getting the:

- Read Only or Edit prompt

AND the bonus function of

- Reading Datasheet view for custom created columns

just by installing Microsoft Designer (an 2007 product I assume??) - currently a free download
