SharePoint Learning Kit: Mike Hines

I found this video which is an interview with Mike Hines who helped develop SLK.

Have a look - its a good video interview to let you know what SLK is and how it is being used in some environment.

Questions:

a. Is there a C-level .PPT and short .PDF explaining the latest MLG

  and SLK 1.2 version capabilities ? I have a presentation/demo to

give to Board of Directors for an 1100-person small school and

  the existing .PPT's on www.codeplex/mlg and www.codeplex.com/slk

are "outdated" (Class Server) or too technical for C-level executives.

b. I am implementing MLG/SLK for a small school (1100 users) which does

NOT have Exchange 2007 or ISA Server 2006. What functionality will

the students, teachers, and parents not be able to use (web parts) ?

In other words, can I go production without Exchange and ISA Servers ?

c. I have downloaded the MLG Refresh for MOSS 2007 document (June 2007).

On page 85, it states to uninstall the older version of the Learning

Gateway. Since this is a new implementation, I need to know how to

install new MLG and if it needs to be done before or after SLK ?

d. In the deployment guide on page 108, is only place to install MLG custom

components. Is this the only place to actually install MLG software framework

besides installing the hardware framework (SQL, LCS, ISA, AD, DNS, etc.) ?

e. What is the latest installation guide for SLK 1.2 ? I have the Getting

Started .PDF but it's dated 12/14/2006 yet the software is dated 8/14/2007.

The customer demo is planned for Oct 18th and I will not be done installing/customizing by then, so that's why I am looking for an updated .PPT and .PDF for C-level executives.

Please feel free to call me at anytime.

Thank you,

Steve,

Thanks for the post - i'll do my best

A.

The presentation i use for my site - I have not used the site template from MLG, 1 i dont like it and 2 i had my sharepoint site up and running 6 months before it was available.  My slides would not be any good.

B.

you will not lose any funcationality.

C.

YOu require teh database to be created before MLG - install SLK to do this

D.

MLG Web parts are for sharepoint - no other install required anywhere else.  The only thing it uses outside of sharepoint is AD for pupils name in the parent OtherIPPhone attribute.  Also the SQL Server for the SLK database

E.

There are no new install instructions.

Do not insatll teh lastest version of SLK - it takes out the SLK observer which is needed.  Only use the one that comes with the MLG download.

Please let me know if i can help at all

Alex

About apearce

My name is Alex Pearce and I live in Birmingham, UK. I am the Learning Environment and ICT Manager at the largest school in the UK. I am implementing the Microsoft Learning Gateway into my 12th school and planning on hosting 60 primary (elementary) school in the same environment. SharePoint is the portal layer to the Microsoft Learning Gateway and I first started using SPS2003 before moving onto MOSS 2007 when it was released in late 2006. I am hoping to share my knowledge with you all. Why I hear you ask!!?! I work for an education organization and the reason I enjoy my job so much is because I want to help pupils/students achieve what they want in life. Why should I hide my secrets? Why not help other schools implement the Microsoft Learning Gateway/SharePoint solution to improve learning in their school. I hope you find my blog useful . www.sharepointblogs.com/ajp
